Meaningful results from the “Empowering Women” program in Long An

In March, BAT Vietnam held a ceremony to summarize the “Women’s Empowerment” program and continued to disburse a sponsoring loan for disadvantaged women in Duc Hue District, Long An Province. The successes of the program achieved in 2022 have provided BAT with a strong incentive to continue the program for many years to come, helping disadvantaged women improve their livelihoods.

At the ceremony, Ms. Vo Thi Tuyet, a member of the Women’s Union in My Quy Dong Commune, said that her family had financial difficulties. After receiving support from BAT (an interest-free loan worth VND10 million), her family’s living standards have gradually stabilized.

Tuyet’s family is one of 40 households in the two border communes of My Quy Dong and My Thanh Tay in Duc Hue District to benefit from the “Women’s Empowerment” program with a combined capital of VND400 million under the cooperation of BAT Vietnam and the Women’s Union of Duc Hue District.

All 40 households have used the loans for the right purposes, with 12 running small businesses and 26 raising, including cattle, pigs and chickens. Many households have started to turn a profit, and every month, they put VND500,000 into savings. Out of the 40, 7 households have already repaid their loans and that money has been channeled into supporting even more households.

“Generally speaking, after one year of implementation, the program has helped women living in border localities have stable jobs with less idle time, paving the way for participating in social work. Others have gained good knowledge and experience in animal husbandry to provide a stable life for their families,” said Ms. Thi Thi Ngoc Hanh, Vice President of the Women’s Union of Duc Hue District.

With the success in 2022, BAT will continue the program with the total amount of VND400 million in 2023 to support women with better lives and stable incomes.
